Intrinsically Safe - Radios for use in the explosive environments of oil and gas installations, such as tankers or drilling platforms, or in gas-laden atmospheres encountered by the emergency services must be designed and constructed to be totally safe. Compliance with the ATEX Directive is now a legal requirement in all European Union Member States. Only portable radios type approved to the ATEX Directive are regarded as intrinsically safe in EU/EFTA countries. Note: This also applies to mobile offshore units, and seagoing vessels that weigh less than 500 gross tonnes.
